Auxerre, pronounced [o.sɛʁ], is a French commune situated in the north-west of Burgundy, in the département of l'Yonne, of which it is the chief town. It is also the centralising office of four cantons and the seat of the communauté d'agglomération de l'Auxerrois. Auxerre had 35,097 inhabitants at the last census in 2023 (official population in force on 1 January 2022), making it the foremost commune in the Yonne and the fifth commune in Burgundy by number of inhabitants.
A little history
A few traces of Protohistoric occupation remain. From the late Bronze Age, a circular enclosure 20 metres in diameter marked by a V-shaped ditch was found in the rue des Montardoins, along with the remains of a substantial building with a circular ditch in the rue Gérot, which also revealed building structures from the La Tène period. Dating from the Hallstatt period, the discovery of a bronze tripod of Etruscan origin suggests that the tin route passed through the territory near the place where the town stands today. Auxerre, in the form of a simple village, came into being at the point where the valley of the Yonne definitively widens.
