Joigny is a French commune situated in the département of Yonne in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Rich in medieval history, of which the old town still bears witness, it is the central town of the Communauté de communes du Jovinien, which holds the Pays d'art et d'histoire designation.
A little history
The site was occupied during the Neolithic period. Ferriers (perhaps pre-dating the Gallo-Roman era) and Gallo-Roman baths can be seen in the Bois du Grand Marchais. During the medieval period, it was the construction of a stronghold at the end of the 10th century by Renard Ier le Vieux, comte de Sens, on part of the lands of the abbaye Sainte-Marie du Charnier de Sens, that would mark the birth of the present-day town, officially founded in 996. Located before the French Revolution in Champagne but attached, owing to its proximity to the river Yonne, to the département of Yonne (along with Sens) by the legislature in 1790.
