A little history
Vernon has ancient origins attested by prehistoric, Celtic, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian remains. It became an important military town following the establishment of the duché de Normandie. The remains of the significant oppidum of the Véliocasses are located away from the site of the present-day Vernon on a rocky spur at Vernonnet (right bank of the Seine). Archaeological excavations have revealed three distinct phases in the construction of its rampart, a murus gallicus, followed by two modifications of a rampart of the Fécamp type, also known as the Belgian type.
