Gisors covers 16.7 km², lies between 47 and 142 m above sea level and had 12,410 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Gisorsiens.
Gisors (pronounced [ʒizɔʁ]) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Eure, in the Normandie region. Situated on the edge of the Vexin français, its architectural heritage bears witness to the fierce struggle between the Capétien and Plantagenêt sovereigns during part of the Middle Ages. An important element of the urban landscape, its castle has stood since that time on a motte-and-bailey mound (butte) dominating the town.
A little history
Gisors was probably founded during the Gallo-Roman period. The Roman road from Beauvais to Chartres passed not far from Gisors, at Moiscourt. Many agreements were signed there between the Dukes of Normandy and the Kings of France, notably in 965 when the peace of Gisors recognised the authority of Richard Ier de Normandie over Normandy and recommended the renunciation of his suzerainty by Lothaire, King of the Franks. The town began to develop around this period, as it was then situated on the border between the duché de Normandie and the Domaine royal français (the part of the kingdom directly under the authority of the King of France).
