Bernay (locally [bɛrnɛ]) is a French commune situated in the département of Eure in Normandie. This small town, a sub-prefecture of Eure, holds the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire label and features preserved Norman architecture with numerous listed buildings protected under historical monuments legislation, as well as an important natural heritage conducive to biodiversity.
A little history
Traces of Neolithic settlement (−3,600 years) uncovered "near the hamlet of les Granges" attest to this. Between 996 and 1008, the Duke of Normandie, Richard II, gave this region as a dower to his wife, Judith de Bretagne, who immediately founded a Benedictine abbey, the abbaye Notre-Dame. The monks developed the site through significant hydraulic works, drainage, mills, fisheries, and so on, and through the construction of an abbey church that remains a jewel of Norman Romanesque architecture. To cover costs and ensure their defence, they ceded part of their property in 1048.
