A little history
In independent Gaul, Gisacum (le Vieil-Évreux) appears to have been a shared sanctuary for three peoples, the Aulerques Éburovices, Aulerques Cénomans and Aulerques Diablintes. After the Roman conquest in 52 BC, the administrative centre of the civitas of the Éburovices was established 5 km away, at Mediolanum Aulercorum, on the current site of Évreux, whilst Gisacum survived as a prosperous religious centre. An episcopal seat from the 4th century, capital of the comté d'Évreux around 990, it belonged to the duché de Normandie, united with the kingdom of England from 1066 to 1204.
