Louviers is a French commune, situated in the département de l'Eure, in the Normandie region. The town's motto, granted by King Charles VII in 1441, is « Loviers le Franc ». The Louviers referred to a type of tightly woven cloth that was manufactured in Louviers and was sought after for clothing people of quality, whereas the drap d'Elbeuf was more ordinary.
A little history
Flint tools from the Palaeolithic era have been discovered on the territory of Louviers, some of which have been placed in the town's museum, alongside fragments of a mammoth tusk found not far from the cemetery. Likewise, the menhir de la Basse Crémonville, the Neolithic tomb that was nearby, and weapons, vessels and tools of stone or bronze gathered on the territory of the town and its surroundings bear witness to human presence during the various periods of prehistory.
