Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton is a French commune situated in the département of Eure, in the Normandie region. It was created under the status of a commune nouvelle by the merger, on 1 January 2017, of Verneuil-sur-Avre and Francheville, which became its communes déléguées.
A little history
Verneuil-sur-Avre was founded in 1129 by Henri Ier, fourth son of Guillaume le Conquérant, on the parishes of Pullay and Poiley, following the revolt of the nobles of 1118–1120. Some of the principal rebels were Richer de l'Aigle, Robert de Neubourg and Eustache, comte de Breteuil, all of whom held possessions around Verneuil. Henri Beauclerc, once these rebels had been subdued, therefore created three fortified boroughs at Verneuil-sur-Avre in order to control the region. The quartier Saint-Martin, situated to the south of the Avre, was dependent on the lords of the Thymerais.
