Uzerche is a French commune situated in the département of Corrèze in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In 1787, the English writer Arthur Young described the town as the "Perle du Limousin", a nickname owing to its picturesque setting and under which it remains widely known today. Built at the top of a rocky spur, surrounded by a meander of the river Vézère over which it stands, Uzerche possesses a rich heritage inherited from the defensive advantages of its site.
A little history
Uzerche, set on the ridge of a rocky escarpment surrounded by a tight bend of the Vézère, has occupied a strategic position since its origins. The Gauls settled no later than the 2nd century BC on this rocky outcrop. It overlooked the col de Sainte-Eulalie, an important ancient road junction of pre-Roman origin and later a place of worship dedicated to Sainte Eulalie, a Spanish martyr of the 3rd century.
