Argentat-sur-Dordogne is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Corrèze in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The town is crossed by the Dordogne. It is a new commune bringing together the former communes of Argentat and Saint-Bazile-de-la-Roche, which became delegated communes on 1 January 2017.
A little history
As far back as the Gaulish era, an oppidum perched on a neighbouring height, the Puy-du-Tour, controlled the ford of a protohistoric route linking Armorique to the Mediterranean. Following the Roman conquest, the Gallo-Roman villa of Longour was established in the plain, an estate focused on farming, close to the Dordogne. During the Merovingian period, a mint operated and facilitated commercial trade. Under the Carolingians, Argentat was the seat of a vicairie, a territorial subdivision in which, under the authority of the count, a vicar administered justice.
