Ustaritz (pronounced [ys.ta.ˈʁits], in Basque, Uztaritze) is a French commune situated in the west of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, and the chief town of the canton of the same name. It developed on the Nive, at the limit of the navigable course of this tributary of the Adour, and on the route napoléonienne which follows the ridges between Bayonne and Hasparren. In the 12th century, the commune became the capital of Labourd after the expulsion from Bayonne of the viscount of Labourd by Richard Cœur de Lion, and remained so until 1790.
