Sainte-Adresse is a French commune in the western suburbs of Le Havre, situated in the département of Seine-Maritime in the Normandie region. It served as the capital of Belgium during the First World War.
A little history
The former name of the commune was Saint-Denis-Chef-de-Caux, owing to the Église Saint-Denis, near the town hall. As Sainte-Adresse is situated on the edge of the cliffs, the Gallo-Roman dwellings of this former fishing village are almost certainly now at the bottom of the English Channel. On 14 August 1415, in the midst of the Hundred Years War, Henri V d'Angleterre landed there with his fleet of 1,600 vessels in an attempt to reconquer his "French inheritance". During the French Revolution, the commune temporarily bore the names Cap-d'Antifer and Cap-de-la-Hève.
