Saint-James ([sɛ̃ ʒɑm]) is a new French commune situated in the département de la Manche in the Normandie region, created on 1 January 2017. It was formed by the merger of the former communes of the ex-communauté de communes de Saint-James, which brought together the former commune of Saint-James and Argouges, Carnet, La Croix-Avranchin, Montanel, Vergoncey and Villiers-le-Pré. The new commune has a population of 5,018 inhabitants.
A little history
The hill on which the village was built has been a strategic point since the Gallo-Roman period, then under the reign of Guillaume le Conquérant, the Hundred Years War, the Wars of Religion, the Chouannerie and the Second World War. In the 10th century, the parish was in the hands of a Breton lord, Hascoit (Harcouet) de Saint-James. The Avranchin and the Cotentin (the present-day département de la Manche) were then controlled by the Bretons. It was Guillaume le Conquérant who, from 1067, is said to have had the ramparts and the first castle built, one of the most powerful in Normandy in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, to protect against Breton attacks.
