Pontorson is a French commune situated in the Manche department in the Normandie region, with a population of 4,280 inhabitants. It was created on 1 January 2016 with the status of commune nouvelle following the merger of Pontorson (commune déléguée) with its neighbours Macey and Vessey. It is the chief town of a canton of twenty-four communes and 17,500 inhabitants, in the arrondissement d'Avranches.
A little history
In the Gaulish era, Pontorson was situated on the territory of the Abrincates, whose western boundary was in all likelihood the Couesnon. This territory later served as the framework for the future diocese of Avranches. In the meantime, it was incorporated into Gallia Lugdunensis, before becoming part of Lugdunensis Secunda, which resulted from the division of the latter, and this in turn was split into two with the provincial reform of Constantine (314 AD) into Lugdunensis Secunda and Lugdunensis Tertia.
