A little history
Originally, the town was merely a dependency of Villemanoche, a neighbouring town in which a monastery was located. Thus, according to a charter dated 833, it was noted as Villemanoche and the adjacent bridge. It is known, however, that in 613 the town was called Pontus Syriacus, meaning Pont Syrien. The town was perhaps, at that time, inhabited by Syrians, who were the principal traders in France at the time. In the 9th century, the Liber sacramentorum of the archbishops of Sens refers to the town simply as Pontum, Pont.
