Oraison (in Provençal Auresoun in the Mistralian standard and Aureson in the classical standard) is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
A little history
The original village was situated on the hill of Tholonet (at the lieu-dit Villevieille). Traces of Roman occupation exist at numerous points across the commune, in the plain of the Durance, whose silting had been carried out during the Roman period for agricultural and craft purposes (a potter's kiln, a villa, a tile works). Among the archaeological discoveries, the site of les Buissonnades (a potter's workshop producing wine amphorae) establishes that the area of Oraison was, owing to its proximity to the voie domitienne, strongly integrated into the Roman Empire and deeply influenced by its ways of life.
