A little history
Henri Ier d'Angleterre had the château de Nonancourt built to put an end to the incursions of the powerful and warlike lords of Thymerais, notably Gervais Ier and Hugues II de Châteauneuf, who supported the cause of the king of France. In 1169, Henri II Plantagenêt fortified the southern border of Normandie, one of the most threatened, on the banks of the Avre, building forts at Verneuil, Courteilles, Tillières and Nonancourt. In 1189, Philippe-Auguste and Richard Cœur de Lion signed a truce there which they would not honour. In 1196, Philippe-Auguste laid siege to the town.
