Neufchâtel-en-Bray, pronounced [nøʃatɛl], is a French commune situated in the département of Seine-Maritime, in the Normandie region. It is in this region that the AOP cheese of the same name is produced.
A little history
The Gaulish name of the former parish of Novientum (> Nogent), attached to Neufchâtel, indicates a settlement on the banks of the river la Telle during the Gallo-Roman period. Around the 4th and 5th centuries, the Franks began to settle in the pays de Bray, as evidenced by the first excavations carried out by abbé Cochet. They intermingled with the Gallo-Roman population and the name Drincourt appeared. In the 9th century, Drincourt was an important market town where a first church was built in the oldest part of the town, the église Saint-Pierre.
