Massangis is a French commune situated in the département of Yonne in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is made up of the three villages of Massangis, Tormancy and Civry-sur-Serein.
A little history
The caves of Villiers-Tournois, 1.5 km upstream from Massangis on the right bank of the Serein, are an archaeological site from the late Bronze Age III. In June 778, Charlemagne confirmed that his ancestor Charles Martel (mayor of the palace from 717 to 741) had granted to the inhabitants of Massangy (Massangiaco), Coutarnoux (Curtilano) and Dissangis (Disangiaco) the use of the forest of Hervaux (Bosco de Hervaux), in perpetuity. The village of Massangis is mentioned in 1145 under the name Massengi. It also appears as Massangiacus, Massingycum and Massingy.
