Les Pieux is a French commune situated in the département de la Manche in the Normandie region, with a population of 3,249 inhabitants. The chief town of the canton sometimes called « Hague-Sud », Les Pieux has experienced, over the past thirty years, a remarkable demographic surge (+ 185.7% between 1975 and 2006) owing to the presence of the nuclear power station at Flamanville, five kilometres away. As a result, the commune has gradually been transformed into a small town.
A little history
In 1974, the remains of a Palaeolithic site were discovered on a rocky plateau on the beach at Sciotot. During the Gallic period, the territory of the commune was in all likelihood under the control of the people of the Unelles. In 2019, a Gallic settlement, a village or substantial agricultural holding, was uncovered during a preventive excavation. The ensemble dates from around the 5th century BC.
