A little history
The territory of the commune was populated at least from the Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian) period, as evidenced by the excavations of Léon Coutil. The existence of the substructure of a large Gallo-Roman theatre at Noyers on the plateau bears witness to the progressive Romanisation of the Gaulish people of the Véliocasses, but no oppidum predating Romanisation has been uncovered. Around the 10th century, a small Scandinavian colony must have settled on the territory of Les Andelys, as numerous place names retain traces of people speaking Old Norse (cf. Toponymie, above).
