Le Trait, the town
Le Trait covers 17.5 km², lies between 1 and 117 m above sea level and had 4,704 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Le Trait is a French commune located in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region.
A little history
A prehistoric presence has been attested in the forest. A stronghold in the Middle Ages, its castle overlooking the Seine was abandoned by its owners, the comtes de Maulévrier (a title then belonging to the family du Fay), in favour of a new residence, the château du Taillis, during the Renaissance. The castle is still visible but is now situated in the neighbouring commune of Duclair. The shipyard was bombed by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft on 24 August 1942. On 4 August and 16 September 1943, on 25 June, and at the end of August 1944, the shipyard was bombed again.
