Langres (pronounced [lɑ̃gʁ]) is a French commune in the département of Haute-Marne, of which it is one of the two sub-prefectures, in the Grand Est region. Langres gave its name to a traditional region that held the title of county and a particular custom distinct from that of Sens (the Pays de Langres), as well as to a diocese whose holder had held the title of duc et pair de France since the 12th century. With its history spanning several millennia, its defensive site occupied since the Neolithic was considered in the 17th century never to have been taken. "La ville est dans une assiette renversée si avantageuse et habitée d'un peuple si guerrier qu'elle passe pour la pucelle du pays".
