Grandvillars, the town
Grandvillars covers 15.2 km², lies between 339 and 413 m above sea level and had 2,947 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Grandvillars [ɡʁɑ̃vilaʁ] is a French commune situated in the département of Territoire de Belfort, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and is the chief town of its canton. Its inhabitants are called the Grandvellais.
A little history
A tumulus containing a chariot burial from the Iron Age was excavated in 1919. The objects from this burial are displayed at the Musée d'histoire de Belfort. During the Roman period, Grandvillars was already an inhabited thoroughfare, as a branch of the Roman road Mandeure-Augst, linking Bourogne to Delle, crossed its territory. A Gallo-Roman settlement may even have occupied the site where the town developed, if the remains discovered around 1850 are to be believed.
