Essert is a French commune situated in the département of Territoire de Belfort, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called the Essertois.
A little history
The first mention of the name of the village (in the form Shert, with Essars and Exers also encountered elsewhere) is found in a document written in German and dated 1303. However, the place was without doubt already occupied in the Neolithic period, like nearby Cravanche. Gallo-Roman and Merovingian remains have been uncovered on the commune's territory. In 1303 a church already existed, which is thought to have been rebuilt or renovated in the 16th century.
