Giromagny (Djéromaigny or dj'romaigny in Franc-Comtois) is a French commune situated in the département of Territoire de Belfort, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the chief town of the canton de Giromagny, which stretches from the Haute-Saône to the Haut-Rhin, and is considered the capital of the pays sous-vosgien, a small region dominated by the ballon d'Alsace and occupying the Belfort portion of the Vosges méridionales. Its inhabitants are known as the Giromagniens.
A little history
Originally, the village depended on the parish of Rougegoutte. With the growth of mining in the valley and in particular the fact that most of the Saxon, Bavarian and Tyrolean miners did not speak French, a new parish came into being in 1569. It was thereafter attached to the diocese of Besançon. The rise of Giromagny dates from the end of the Middle Ages with the beginning of the extraction of silver, lead and copper from mines by the Habsbourg, who were at that time lords of the Rosemont.
