Gournay-en-Bray covers 10.4 km², lies between 84 and 133 m above sea level and had 5,723 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Gournay-en-Bray is a French commune situated in the département of Seine-Maritime in the Normandie region. A former stronghold whose fortifications date back to the tenth century, Gournay-en-Bray was a major commercial town and the "capitale du beurre" of Normandie until the end of the nineteenth century, when it was supplanted by Isigny-sur-Mer in the Calvados. Its medieval centre was almost entirely destroyed by the German bombardments of 1940 during the Bataille de France and its reconstruction took more than ten years.
A little history
Settlements existed at Gournay-en-Bray during the Gallic Wars under Jules César, as they did at Alges, Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, Ferrières-en-Bray, Dampierre-en-Bray, Elbeuf-en-Bray, Avesnes-en-Bray, Neuf-Marché, and elsewhere. During the Frankish period, Gournay, under the name of Gornacum, is cited as one of the ten principal points of the pagus Bracensis (pays de Bray) of Neustria. In 911, by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, Charles III le Simple granted Rollon the region lying between "l'Epte et la mer".
