A little history
In the 19th century, an amateur archaeologist, the abbé Cochet, uncovered the traces of a Gallo-Roman site. A canton chief town during the Revolution, Criel remained essentially a village of fishermen and farmers until the arrival of the railway in 1872. The existence of a station made it possible to develop the exploitation of pebbles and the establishment of two elegant seaside resorts, one at the mouth of the Yères and the other at Mesnil-Val. This was the great era of the Norman seaside resorts that served as a prototype for the Balbec of Marcel Proust, Trouville, Cabourg, Deauville, Dieppe.
