Cousance covers 6.4 km², lies between 196 and 330 m above sea level and had 1,287 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cousance is a French commune situated in the Jura department, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is one of the 33 communes that make up the canton of Saint-Amour and has been part of the Communauté de communes Porte du Jura since 1 January 2017.
A little history
The first mentions of Cousance appear as early as the 12th century, when a manuscript records the existence of a mill, whilst the church, built at the same period, still retains several elements of its original Gothic architecture. Throughout the Middle Ages, Cousance was the chief town of the barony of Chevreaux. The inhabitants, mainmortable tenants, lived in direct dependence on the lords whose château still dominates the town. Justice was administered under the old market halls of the square. Despite this subjection, the village gradually became the principal economic centre of the barony thanks to its markets and its fairs.
