Saint-Claude, the town

Saint-Claude covers 70.2 km², lies between 360 and 1,222 m above sea level and had 8,386 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Saint-Claude, known in Arpitan-Comtois as San-Yâdou, is a French commune and sub-prefecture of the département du Jura, in the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Saint-Claude had 8,386 inhabitants in 2023, making it the third most populous commune in the département. Its inhabitants are known as the Sanclaudiens.

A little history

The town developed initially around a monastery founded at the beginning of the 5th century by two brother monks and abbots, Romain and Lupicin. It was first known as Condat (from the Celtic Condate meaning "confluence" between the Bienne and the Tacon), then Saint-Oyend-de-Joux, named after the abbot Oyend (or Eugendus) who expanded the influence of the monastery from the end of the 5th century onwards. In 639, saint Claude became a monk in the abbey, which at that time bore the name of Saint-Oyend. Saint Claude died on 6 June 699.

Selling in Saint-Claude

Pricing in Saint-Claude starts by placing your property inside the €551 to €1,027 band rather than on the median alone. The median describes the middle of the market; condition, floor, outdoor space and energy rating decide where in the band you sit.

With 110 sales a year, Saint-Claude is regular without being deep. Positioning matters more here than in a dense market, because a buyer who steps back is not immediately replaced.

Briveo values your Saint-Claude property from the same DVF file, keeping only sales of comparable properties closest to your address, free of charge and with no obligation, then supports the sale through to the deed.

Buying in Saint-Claude

Reading the €551 to €1,027 band is a buyer’s main tool in Saint-Claude. A property at the bottom is not a bargain and one at the top is not a rip-off, the band measures how different the properties are, not how well they are priced.

A stable market usually means a negotiation decided by the property itself rather than by any general trend.

Acquisition costs are budgeted on top of the price, around 8 % on an existing property, around 3 % on a new one. These are orders of magnitude; the notary computes the exact amount.

Over the last twelve published months the median apartment price moved by +0.7 %. That amounts to stability. Stability is the most common state of a local market, and it means sellers and buyers agree on price levels.

No five-year reading is available for Saint-Claude. The apartment sales we currently use (2023 à 2025) do not go back far enough to compute one, so the long-term direction cannot be stated here.

Among the towns tracked by BRIVEO in the same department, on the median apartment price, Montmorot 121 % above. Those are the gaps a buyer widening their search area actually meets.
