Lons-le-Saunier covers 7.7 km², lies between 243 and 415 m above sea level and had 16,618 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lons-le-Saunier (pronunciation [lɔ̃s.lə.so.nje]) is the chief town of the département du Jura, in the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The town is situated at an altitude of 255 metres. Lons-le-Saunier owes its name to its salt works, first exploited by the Romans, which made the fortune of families from Bourgogne, Vienne and Chalon from the Middle Ages onwards, as well as numerous abbeys and convents.
A little history
The site has been known since prehistory, and the founding of the town dates back to at least around 100 BC. The Séquanes dominated the region until the Roman conquest. Salt resources were already being exploited (see salines de Lons-le-Saunier and the history of salt in the Jura). A castrum is mentioned in 1097. In 1237, it became the château de Jean de Chalon.
