Clairvaux-les-Lacs is a French commune in the département du Jura, in the historical and cultural region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, in the Massif du Jura, at the mouth of a small reculée which cuts into the plateau de Champagnole, where its two lakes are located, on the shores of which the village sits. Human settlement on the banks of the lakes of Clairvaux dates back to the Neolithic period, when a rich heritage from that era was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. The site was inscribed on 27 June 2011 on the Unesco World Heritage List.
A little history
The canton of Clairvaux-les-Lacs has a rich Neolithic heritage represented above all by numerous lake dwellings situated, among other places, on the northern shore of the Grand Lac de Clairvaux. Ongoing excavations concern a village from the Middle Neolithic period (4000 BC). In June 2011, the pile-dwelling sites of Clairvaux were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
