Chéroy, the town
Chéroy covers 10.5 km², lies between 123 and 159 m above sea level and had 1,760 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Chéroy is a French commune situated in the département of Yonne in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are known as the Caroissiens.
A little history
In 1120, Salon, Viscount of Sens and owner of vast estates, donated the villages of Chéroy, Brannay, Lixy and Voulx to the monks of the abbey of Saint-Jean-lès-Sens. In June 1155, an important assembly brought together numerous leading figures of the kingdom at Soissons. It decided to authorise King Louis VII to intervene directly whenever the internal peace was threatened. Thus, the Paix de Dieu (relating to the Evolution du mouvement and the Paix de l'Eglise, organised by councils and synods) became a Paix du roi. For the first time, the sovereign was entitled to bring into line any powerful figure who failed to respect the Church or the civilian population.
