On the boundary between the communes of Cerisy and Saint-Jean-de-Savigny stands a vitrified oppidum of the Fécamp type known as Le Grand Castel or Butte des Romains. This stronghold, situated on the frontier between the Bajocasses and the Unelles, may have belonged to one or the other of these peoples. A Roman road also passed through Cerisy. The earliest memories of the history of Cerisy-la-Forêt in the Middle Ages date back to the 6th century, at a time when Gaul was beginning to be Christianised.
