Carbonne (Carbona in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the centre of the Haute-Garonne département, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Volvestre, made up of the valleys of the Arize and the Volp, close to the valley of the Garonne, located to the south of Toulouse and in the northern part of the Couserans. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the Arize, the Eaudonne and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The Romans are said to have settled on the banks of the Garonne and to have produced charcoal there (hence the name of the town). The oldest document mentioning the name Carbonne dates from 1145 and describes the donation of land made by the baron de Tersac to the abbaye de Bonnefont. From this land cleared by the monks, a village was created within the peninsula, in the loop of the protective meander of the Garonne. In 1244, the troops of Simon V de Montfort pillaged the village, which did not come back to life until 1256, when the first bastide was built by Alphonse de Poitiers.
