Canteleu, the town
Canteleu covers 17.6 km², lies between 2 and 138 m above sea level and had 14,402 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Canteleu is a French commune situated in the département of Seine-Maritime in the Normandie region.
A little history
On the riverbanks, the cliffs served for a long time as precarious dwellings when danger lurked. Extremely spread out, the commune was divided up, first into seigneuries, then into hamlets, all grouped around the church built in the 16th century. The hamlets of Bapeaume, Croisset, Dieppedalle, Biessard and le Village all played an important role in the development of the town. In the 13th century, the plateau of Canteleu was cleared, notably by monks and religious orders who left behind several place names such as le Clos aux Moines and la Béguinière.
