It was the chef-lieu of a canton from 1790 to 2014, at the point when the implementing decrees no 2014-268 of 27 February 2014, setting out the delimitation of cantons in the département des Vosges, officially transferred all the communes of the canton de Bulgnéville into that of Vittel. Its inhabitants are known as the Bulgnévillois.
