Épinal is a French commune situated in the département des Vosges, in the région Grand Est. The préfecture of the Vosges, it lies to the south of the historic and cultural region of Lorraine. Épinal is crossed by the Moselle, a tributary of the Rhine.
A little history
The mythical founding date of Épinal is said to be 983, as celebrations were held for the "Millénaire" in June 1983. This date was chosen for political reasons to mark a "starting point" following the election of Philippe Séguin as mayor in March 1983. On land that belonged to the ancient city of the Leuques, there is a promontory overlooking the north-south waterways of the ancient route de Germanie (the Roman road Metz-Bâle) and a junction of the Langres-Strasbourg road. Thierry Ier, Bishop of Metz, decided to build a castle and a monastery on one of the manses of the parish of Dogneville.
