Broglie [bʁɔgli] is a French commune situated in the département de l'Eure, in the Normandie region. The locality bore the name Chambrais until 1742, the year in which the land was erected by Louis XV into a duché-pairie for the benefit of the maréchal de Broglie.
A little history
Broglie is a settlement of Celtic (Gaulish) origin which stood at the crossroads of Roman roads used by salt and iron routes. Many ore-smelting furnaces are found there, as well as châteaux and churches that were pillaged and burned on numerous occasions. It is probably an ancient Gaulish foundation that most likely owes its development to the fact that it was situated at a crossroads, though this place should not be confused with Chambray, another commune in the Eure, whose etymology may be the same. The town features in the dowry of Judith de Bretagne and became in the 10th century an integral part of the domain of duc Richard II.
