Brionne, the town
Brionne covers 16.8 km², lies between 47 and 145 m above sea level and had 4,185 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Brionne (in Norman, Brioune) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Eure, in the Normandie region. Its inhabitants bear the name Brionnais.
A little history
A Gaulish town situated on the boundary of the territories of the Lexoviens, the Éburovices and the Véliocasses, Brionne stands at a crossroads of four Roman roads, two of which were of primary importance. It is cited in the table de Peutinger and in 337 in the itinéraire d'Antonin. In the 850s, the jarl Rollon plundered Brionne during a Viking raid. However, the town became Norman following an agreement reached with Charles le Simple. Around 980, Richard Ier de Normandie, duc de Normandie, gave Brionne as a dowry to Godefroy de Brionne.
