Barneville-Carteret (pronounced [baʁnəvilkaʁtʁe] or [baʁnvilkaʁtʁe]) is a French commune, situated on the Côte des Isles in the département of Manche in the Normandie region, with a population of 2,223 inhabitants. A seaside resort on the Côte des Isles, it resulted from the merger in 1964 of the two neighbouring but distinct market towns, Barneville-sur-Mer (pronounced) and Carteret (pronounced), whose port offers maritime links to the Channel Islands.
A little history
Palaeolithic settlement of the Cotentin is attested at three sites, the Val de Saire, Neanderthal man at Pou at the top of the beach at the foot of the cap du Rozel, and in 2007 on the territory of the commune at the carrefour Boudet, with the discovery of lithic elements currently dated to 320,000 years ago. Archaeological explorations of the cap de Carteret reveal occupation from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age. At those periods the line of the shoreline was close to what we know today, with a sea level slightly lower. There is no archaeological evidence of Roman use of the cap de Carteret for military purposes, nor of any remains of Gallo-Roman dwellings on the territory of the commune.
