Appoigny, the town
Appoigny covers 22.1 km², lies between 82 and 201 m above sea level and had 3,114 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Appoigny is a French commune situated in the département of Yonne, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
A little history
By virtue of its position on the border of Bourgogne and Champagne, crossed by an important Roman road, Appoigny experienced, from its earliest origins, the turbulent existence common to towns along major thoroughfares. The Huns, the Francs, the Normands… plundered the village on each of their visits. Bequeathed to the church of Auxerre by saint Germain, bishop of Auxerre, the lands remained the property of the bishops of Auxerre from 448 until the French Revolution. In 596, the ruling of saint Aunaire, 18th bishop of Auxerre (572–605), included Appoigny (Eppoigny) among the thirty principal parishes of the diocese, which he subjected to a rota of prayers.
