Ancy-le-Franc is a French commune located in the département of Yonne, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants, known as the Ancéacquais, number 834 in 2023. The village is part of a communauté de communes, Le Tonnerrois en Bourgogne, comprising 52 communes and 16,796 inhabitants in 2014.
A little history
Known as Anciacum as early as 721, it was originally the vast agricultural estate of a man named Antius, which would later be divided between a freed portion (attested as Anceium francum in 1225) and a portion that retained its servile status (attested as Anceyum servosum as early as 1116). Excavations carried out before the 1980s at a sand pit revealed objects dating from the final Bronze Age. In the early 1980s, archaeological digs were conducted by Robert Biton in the Les Fontainottes quarter. These uncovered post holes a few centimetres wide from a hut wall, two hearths, and a possible silo.
