Senones ([sənon], in mountain Vosgian [snoːn]) is a French commune situated in the département des Vosges in Lorraine, in the administrative region Grand Est. Historically, Senones was the capital of the principauté de Salm-Salm, a dependency of the Saint-Empire romain germanique established around 1751 and annexed by the Convention in 1793. Its inhabitants are called the Senonais.
A little history
Formerly known as Senonia, the present-day town grew up around the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre, founded in 640 by saint Gondelbert. Gondelbert, patron of a Merovingian ban, may have encouraged the establishment of a modest moutier or monastery after 640. Because he carried the crozier, he was formerly believed to have been archbishop of Sens. In the Carolingian era, the abbey and ban de Senones were assigned to the bishop Angelram de Metz and his successors. In 1111, the bishop of Metz imposed as voué (protector) the comte Hermann de Salm.
