Coins dating from the Roman Empire have been discovered on the territory. However, after a long period of obscurity, Sellières is not mentioned until the 12th century. In the 13th century, Sellières, with its seigneurial château and fortified town, was the chief town of an important seigneury. Sellières came under the first counts of Burgundy, then under their descendants in the female line of the Maison de Vienne (including Hugues d'Antigny), before returning through an exchange to their agnatic line of Bourgogne-Auxonne-Chalon.
