Sainte-Rose (in Guadeloupean Creole, Sentwòz) is a French commune, situated in the department of Guadeloupe. Its inhabitants are known as the Sainte-Rosien(ne)s.
A little history
The first settlers, 400 French people commanded by Jean du Plessis d'Ossonville and Charles Liénard de l'Olive with four monks of the order of Saint Dominique including Pierre Pélican and Raymond Breton, landed at Pointe Allègre in Sainte-Rose on 28 June 1635. The Guadeloupean historian Jules Ballet (1825–1904) mentions the construction of two forts. The fort Saint-Pierre stood on the banks of a river known as the rivière du Vieux-Fort, where Liénard de l'Olive established his residence on its banks. Du Plessis established his dwelling to the east of the Pointe, on the banks of the rivière Petit-Fort, as a fortification had been installed at its mouth.
