A little history
The founding of Sainte-Anne dates from the establishment of its eponymous parish in 1691. The town was destroyed during the Seven Years' War by the English, which caused it to lose its role as chef-lieu of Grande-Terre to Pointe-à-Pitre. With economic growth (the export of sugar and rum), the port of Sainte-Anne nonetheless became the seat of the Admiralty in the 18th century and the commune was administratively established in the late 1830s. During the period 1794–1802, the commune took the name of Fraternité following the abolition of slavery decided by the Convention nationale.
