Le Moule (known as Moul or a Moul in Guadeloupean Creole) is a French commune, situated in the overseas department and region of Guadeloupe. Located in the north-east of the island of Grande-Terre, on the Atlantic coast, its economy relies principally on agriculture and tourism. The name of the commune comes from the term môle, which means jetty. Its inhabitants are called les Mouliens and les Mouliennes.
A little history
The Moulian coastline was occupied as early as the pre-Columbian era, between the 5th and the 3rd century BC, by Amerindian populations originating from the Orinoco basin, connected to the Saladoid culture. Several archaeological sites, comprising pottery and remains of dwellings, attest to this presence. This is notably the case of the site of l'abri Patate, which contains rock engravings and bears witness to continuous occupation between the years 800 and 1100.
