A little history
In September 1794, the Pointe-à-Bacchus was the site of a significant battle led by republican troops (commanded by général Mathieu Péalardy and composed of French republicans and sans-culottes noirs, free since the abolition of slavery proclaimed on 4 February 1794 by the Convention nationale) under the direction of Victor Hugues, fought to liberate the island from the English troops who had occupied it since 20 April 1794. Following this defeat, the royalists allied with the British were executed.
