A little history
Saint-Michel is a community of the haut ban d'Étival, drawn into the economic orbit of Saint-Dié very early, well before the 15th century. It came under the jurisdiction and administration of the abbey and the Premonstratensian chapter of Étival. In 1710, the community partially emancipated itself by joining the bailliage of Saint-Dié. An appeal could be made to Saint-Dié, but the inhabitants were still subject in the first instance to Étival as they formed a community of the haut ban d'Etival.
